Teaching Somatics for Embodiment and Life Skills
Dancers especially need support in feeling comfortable in their bodies, and developing a healthy body/mind connection. What life skills can we teach through somatic movement to support teens and young adult dancers? How can we encourage a compassionate community as well? In this session you will experience a somatic movement practice based in embodied anatomy, followed by a discussion drawing from the presenter’s 8 Key Pedagogy Principles for Teaching Somatic Movement Education. These methods help students to learn basics of anatomy and physiology, and unlearn self-defeating habits that impact body image and self-esteem. They also support students to both respect diversity and gain compassion for themselves and others. These practices thus help to equip dancers with essential tools for well being; now and into adulthood.
The material is based on Susan’s book, The Embodied Teen, the first book to offer a somatic education curriculum adapted to the unique needs of adolescents. Enjoy time to move, reflect, and experience these lessons to empower our next generation.
